Environmental Education (EE) is rising and developing with the producing and getting serious of the environment problems. This paper analyzed the contradiction among EE, society development and the needs of the educational reform. We investigated the status of EE and the teachers' EE idea in nearly 70 schools, and discussed the requirement of the students' environment awareness in the new curricula standard of chemistry, and tried to put forward some advice combining with excellence EE ideas of developed countries.In the part of theoretical research, we stated the evolution of the international EE, especially the Education for Sustainable Development and recent development. It introduced an new EE modality in America -Using the Environment as an Integrating Context for improving student learning(EIC model), including its form, networks, educational efficacy and Framework for evaluation. We analyzed the embodiment of EIC idea in Chemcom and Salters Advanced Chemistry, oppugned the implement of EIC model and its evaluation, and thought about the feasibility would happened in chemistry teaching of our country.In the part of practical research, it included two works.We offered an elective of Education for Sustainable Development through EIC model for ninth grade students, adopting subject learning and inquiry activity. The contents are made of six topics of main global environmental problems, water, air, waste, energy and green life. After the semester, students expressed their concerns with environment in free forms.EIC teaching was carried out with selecting two tenth grade classes for comparison, one class adopting traditional teaching manner, and the other learning chemistry with the EIC model. We designed environmental scene and teaching process, trying to get the educational efficacy of EIC education in chemistry teaching. The efficacy included the development of students' learning enthusiasm, society responsibility and test achievementIt was indicated that the expected results were obtained. After evaluating the teaching process of the EIC model and the production of the students, we find that it is feasible and valuable to use the EIC model in EE elective and chemistry teaching in middle school. As lacking of experimental time and quantitative evaluation, we need to do more reaseach in the future.
