One of the basic attainments in Chinese learning required of a student at modern secondary vocational schools is oral communication skill, that is, the listening/speaking competency as well as the savoir-faire that one demonstrates in interpersonal dynamics and problem solving context. As yet, however, oral communication has not been given due recognition in teaching practice. As far as the Chinese teaching in the secondary vocational school is concerned, there is a ubiquitous imbalance weighted in favor of the development of reading/writing skills over that of listening/speaking ones, with oral communication training as the most tenuous part of the Chinese textbook. In fact, a close examination of the oral communication status will show that a large proportion of the students have difficulty in making oral presentations or appropriate remarks. Meanwhile, the development of oral communication skill is not only the basic requirement of the Chinese curriculum but also an imperative of social development, and thus is of great realistic significance in Chinese teaching practice at modern secondary vocational schools. In view of the weakness in oral communication widely found in the student, this paper pinpoints the importance of enhancing oral communication training in modern education. Then pursuant to related scientific theories, based on the psychological characteristics of the students and the features of Chinese teaching for secondary vocational schools, this paper tentatively explores and summarizes the oral communication teaching principles and appropriate strategies to be applied.
