"Independent Institute Pattern"is one part of the development of non-nation-supported institutions in China's higher education reform. Short though its history is, the pattern, at a vigorous momentum, has become an indispensable power in the shift from'education for elites'to'education for the public'in China's higher education system. However, the rapid development of non-nation-supported institutions is beset with a series of irregular phenomena. For instance, there appears a pluralism tendency of school-running patterns, some of which are equivocal in nature and uneven in terms of development levels. All these problems want further discussion, due to the fact that the theoretical study on"Independent Institute Pattern"is still on a preliminary phase. The thesis is composed of three parts focusing on an analysis of"Independent Institute Pattern". Part one deals with the background, birth, definition, and category of independent institutes, which is followed by an exploration on problems cropping up in their development process in Part two. The last part tries to offer a perspective of independent institutes.Through argumentation, the thesis is meant to tentatively give a comparatively comprehensive description of"Independent Institute Pattern", through a close study on its birth, development, definition, category, functions and problems, to offer it a reasonable positioning in China's higher education system.
