Chinese ancient elementary teaching materials are the carriers of ancient Chinese elementary education and the important part of Chinese traditional culture. Undoubtedly, they become the precious resources of our understanding and research about ancient Chinese education. Most of the elementary teaching materials originated from the feudal society which determines their contents have to serve the feudalism. However, education practice since time immemorial proves that the compile and application of the elementary teaching materials are pretty successful. That means they must enjoy scientific and reasonable elements. The purpose of studying the ancient elementary teaching materials is to find its reasonable inner core. Then we can inherit its outstanding educational tradition which can also unify our people excellent traditional culture into the modern culture and education. Ultimately, it can promote the construction and revolution of modern Chinese teaching materials.Chinese ancient elementary teaching materials originated from Zhou and Qin Dynasty and ended in Republic of China, so it enjoys a long history. It can be divided into six categories according to its contents: comprehensive centralized literacy type, ethics and morality type, historical and knowledge type, poem and teaching type, natural science and common sense type as well as reference book type. Compared with the modern elementary Chinese teaching materials, it pays more attention to moral and etiquette education. Besides, it includes larger knowledge contents, stronger in its practicability, and easier to be chanted by children because it adopts poetic ways. Nowadays, more and more emphasis is being paid on ancient elementary materials. Undoubtedly, ancient elementary teaching materials are receiving more and more attention in inheriting the Chinese traditional culture, in the teaching of classical Chinese as well as in the compile of Chinese teaching materials and the other practical significance. The development and utilization of ancient teaching materials are mainly reflected in two aspects: on the one hand, it can be shown in its utilization of compile experiences and partially contents borrowing by the present elementary Chinese teaching materials; on the other hand, it's the chanting on ancient Chinese teaching materials by modern children.This thesis adopts various research methods, such as documentary mythologies, theoretical and analytic methodologies as well as questionnaires. It illustrates the realistic significance of ancient elementary teaching materials. By comparison, it points out the modern elementary Chinese teaching materials inherit and carry forward the successful experiences from the ancient ones in its usages of rhythmic ways of centralized reading. Besides, it puts forward feasible suggestions about chanting in ancient Chinese elementary teaching materials. Compared with the previous research which pays more emphasis on historical conclusive comments about this field, the thesis explores its Chinese teaching significance, so it brings forth new ideas.
