Vocational institutions occupy an important position in the new educational development program in China, and meanwhile are facing with many opportunities and challenges. Currently, vocational institutions still have many common problems: they pay little attention on the new management concepts; human resource management's role seems not clear to them; social environment has done great adverse effects on education; they have not really integrated themselves into the needs of society; study of advanced management experience can not be carried out; the network and new technologies have not fully played their roles. To further promote the teaching quality and level, vocational institutions should strengthen self-construction constantly. Encouraging management reform and innovation and exploring effective methods to management is the only way to improve the quality and core competitiveness of vocational institutions.Knowledge management, as a new management theory first emerged in the West, has now developed to the second generation. Currently the theory is more focused on the process of knowledge management, knowledge innovation and organizational performance, and gradually integrated with learning organization theory. Knowledge management theory is being widely used in the knowledge-intensive and knowledge-innovative foreign enterprises to improve the management efficiency and corporate culture. Although there are large quantities of academic researches on knowledge management in the homeland, the specific application is still at the start, especially for that in school management.Vocational institutions, which can meet social requirement, should use the experience of advanced management thoughts of enterprises for reference. This paper attempts to analyze and make a probe into the problems encountered in the development of a vocational institution, and then make some suggestions and come up with solutions according to knowledge management theory. Measures include correct understanding of knowledge leadership, more emphasis on the development of human resources, implementing Knowledge Alliance (knowledge communities) as a strategic mission, construction of excellent campus culture, reasonable choice of knowledge management tools, and issues concerned in promoting knowledge management and so on.Knowledge management theory is being developed and will be developed with the application of management theory. Vocational institutions will draw on that to be one of the props and the pillars of China's educational undertaking.
