The theory of multiple intelligences (MI) was put forward by an American psychologist, Howard Gardner, in 1983. It emphasizes the integrated capabilities of learners, including verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, visual-spatial, musical-rhythmic, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal and natural-environment intelligences. It stresses the diversity and special intelligences of learners, focuses on the learners, highlights the learning process, and pays attention to developing multiple abilities of learners. It helps us understand the diversity in our students and offers a framework to address these differences in our teaching. Based on MI theory, we learn that students have their own strong intelligences and weak intelligences. It is necessary to make full use of learners'strengths and harness their weaknesses so as to help the students improve their language competences. Therefore, MI theory can make up for many disadvantages of the current teaching methods and become an important theoretical back-up in college English teaching.Based on the teaching ideas of Multiple Intelligences (MI) which was created by American college psychologist Howard. Gardner, the thesis first introduces the meaning, structure, characteristics and significance of MI theory, states MI theory's guiding function for college English teaching, analyzes the guiding principles, discusses the strategies and methods of applying MI theory into college English teaching. This paper aims to testify whether the applying of MI theory to college English teaching is feasible or not; whether college English teaching based on MI theory can improve college students'proficiency and arouse their interest and motivation towards English learning. The results of the analysis show that the MI theory can promote college English teaching. It changes teachers'traditional teaching ideas and evaluation, sets up the right philosophy of students, and supplies various teaching strategies with theoretical foundation. Under the guidance of MI theory, teachers teach according to the students'aptitude and design various classroom activities. As a result, students are motivated and their English proficiency is promoted. College English teaching research which is based on MI theory is of great value and significance to not only college English teaching theories but also practice.
