Based on the research and analysis of Present English reading and teaching situation of upper primary students in Lu Shu Primary School, this paper points out that upper primary students in rural areas are lacking in various English reading materials (Some students only have their textbook as reading materials.), English knowledge and necessary reading methods and strategies from A-teachers'perspective. The research and analysis also reflects that some English teachers do not have professional skills and systematic teaching methods of reading. This current situation has restricted the improvement of reading ability of students in rural areas. Because the first way for primary students to learn English is to accept classroom teaching method, the teaching of reading has become the key to improve reading ability. In order to make sure that primary students in rural areas can catch up with students in urban areas in English reading and grasp certain methods of self reading, this research advocates topic expanding method to teach English reading and hopes to broaden students'horizon and better off the reading situation of upper primary students in rural areas through a series of teaching,Based on classes of reading of upper primary students in Lu Shu Primary School, the author and another two colleagues has compiled a series of reading materials according to the topics in the textbook and requirements and features of different grades, starting from Autumn in 2009. Teachers make the full use of these materials in the teaching process and they have formed contents, methods and strategies of topic expanding teaching method. Meanwhile, according to the analysis of the reading situation in students'spare time and the discussion with English teachers, the paper holds the view that the topic expanding research to a certain degree has a great effect on students'reading. Many students become interested in reading and they have formed some reading skills. Their reading ability has been improved in a general scale. On the basis of the results of the analysis of the subsequent materials, the author raises four pieces of advice for the teaching of reading of upper primary students. Firstly, the school board should strengthen the construction of English reading curriculum. Secondly, English teacher's professional requirements must reflect the spirit of the time. Thirdly, teachers should advocate variety and consistency in the expanding teaching. Finally, parents should make English reading the essential in students'learning period.
