English is an international language, which plays a more and more important role in international affairs. With China's eighth curriculum reform in the field of basic education carried out throughout the whole country, English teaching in senior high schools has made great progress. However, if we probe into the teaching practice of senior high school English classrooms, we can still discover something dissatisfactory. Teachers still play a dominant role in most classroom teaching. Some teachers' teaching philosophy and methods have not been updated. Teachers still focus on grammar, language knowledge and skills while ignore oral English. Students'English proficiency is low. So enhancing teaching effectiveness is becoming urgent. Effective teaching refers to using the least time and energy to get the most effective and fruitful results. Effective teaching can successfully promote learning and progress of students, achieve the teaching objectives and meet the teaching needs and demands with the least cost. Effective teaching can enhance sustainable development in education and students'progress. In order to find out the problems existing in senior high school English teaching and explore strategies of effective English teaching, with the colleagues'help and permission, the author watched a great number of English classes of senior high school, observed and recorded every details of their teaching process. After classes, I interviewed the teachers and did a questionnaire to learn about their teaching philosophy, teaching objectives, teaching strategies and the feedbacks of their classes. The author, together with the teachers, discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the classes and tried to find out the existing problems and explore the strategies to improve the effectiveness of English teaching. At the same time, the author also observed the students'responses and behaviors in their study process. After classes, the author interviewed the students to learn about their opinions about English study, their interests. English study strategies and the difficulties in their English study. The author used classroom observations, informal interviews, case study and teacher questionnaire to get the first-hand teaching data and evidence, and then analyzed them to find out the existing problems and put forward some strategies of effective teaching. The main problems existing in senior high school English teaching include:low professionalism of some teachers, improper teachers' attitudes and the problems existing in classroom teaching including vague teaching objectives; unreasonable leading-in; teacher-centered teaching; ineffective classroom activities; unreasonable evaluation. Feasible strategies of effective English teaching in senior high school are as follows:1.
