With the development of society, the progress of science and technology, the implementation of the basic education reform, and the teacher professional development, teaching model in China has been shifted from teacher-centered to learner-centered. Accordingly, great changes have taken place in teachers'role, which requires that the focus of teacher training should be shifted from knowledge-based to the development of teachers'overall quality. As an English teacher, development of certain teaching skills is not only based on some theories concerning with teaching and learning but also from certain teaching practice. Micro-teaching, also called miniature teaching, as an effective method in training student teachers'teaching skills, has been widely applied in teacher training programs.This paper theoretically explained the definition, process, and characteristics of micro-teaching, as well as the definition, content and classification of teachers'teaching ability. In the application, the whole process of micro-teaching is divided into four stages, namely, pre-learning stage, application stage, evaluation stage and re-teaching stage. Teaching abilities of English teachers can be classified into teaching cognitive ability, teaching design ability, teaching implementation ability and teaching evaluation ability. Firstly, through questionnaire this paper attempts to investigate the impact of micro-teaching on the development of student teachers'teaching ability on the whole. Then this paper tries to find out the impact of micro-teaching in detail through interview. The analysis of the result shows that micro-teaching training has a great positive effect on developing student teachers'teaching ability. From the analysis, a conclusion is drowned that the application stage of micro-teaching has the greatest impact on improving pre-service teachers'teaching ability. And micro-teaching is especially useful in developing student teachers'teaching skills in leading-in, probing, evaluating students'works, and so on.The author put forward her view about the limitation of this program according to the results. For example, enhancing the cooperation between primary schools, high schools and normal universities. Finally, this paper made a summary in accordance with the actual situation and made a conclusion about shortcomings of this study.
