KDP crystal, as the important optical element material, is widely used in the solid state laser, high power laser and other high technologies. The KDP crystal belongs to the soft fragile crystal, it is soft, deliquescent and keen to the temperature changes, thus make it very hard to process. The developed countries have studied the KDP crystal very early, and have made a lot of achievements, but these things are kept from us as classified secrets. There lacks KDP crystal machining equipment, and the relative study is also rare, so it is very urgent to develop a new kind of machine which is capable to saw the KDP crystal with simple structure and high efficiency.After deeply studying the present research status and the development that are both at home and abroad in machining the KDP crystal, we determined the machining method, structure characteristics, performance parameters and machine structure of the overall design combining the existing experiences in sawing the KDP crystal according to the processing request.According to the principle of modular design, we have made some thorough analysis of the function modularization of the KDP crystal processing machine. We have divided the new KDP crystal processing machine into function modules using the independence principle of structure and function, and combining with the characteristics of the present crystal processing machines using integrate innovation method, we have finished the structural design and the overall scheme design, and decided to use gantry type KDP crystal consolidated line-saw as the final scheme.KDP crystals are soft and brittle, so the new sawing machine uses a line saw to cut the crystal with flexible sawing method. Thus are achieved by ensuring the stability of the machine structure via the calculation of some functional parts and eliminating the influence on the saw which is due to quiver produced by the moving parts of the machine. The rationality verification of the machine’s structural stability and the moving parts can ensure the new sawing machine to saw the crystals safely with high efficiency.KDP crystals are prone to crack due to the nature that the quiver of the line saw in the process of sawing can cause the splitting crack of the machining region on the crystal. Sliding sleeve structure is the adapting piece which joined together with many main source of the tremor such as the driving parts. We have performed the statics and modal analysis on the simplified model of the structure through the bidirectional parameters interaction with the software ANSYS Workbench and Solidworks, then feed the relative parameter back to the machine structure designing, and avoided negative influence on the machining of the sawing process, which the resonance that is produced by the slide sleeve structure generated. The FEA of the corresponding structure could make the whole structure more reasonable and fulfill the requirement of the KDP crystal sawing process.
