In the second language teaching, the quality of teaching materials is thebasic for the teachers and students. For Audio-visual-oral materials, there are alot of experiments and experience in English field, but in teaching Chinese assecond language, we need to pay more attention. This paper focuses on the topic of the Audio-visual-oral materials, whichhas been proved by the precious experiments as the most important factor of thestudents’ interests in language learning. We choose three representativetextbooks in the audio-visual-oral area. The first book is the English materialFamily Album U.S.A, which was published in1983, with very good topic on thedaily life. Another two are the resent representative Chinese textbooks. Then wecompare two Chinese books with the English one. First, we analyze the types ofthe topics of each book in detail so as to find if those topics are the topics theforeign students love or not. Then we count the quantity of different kind oftopics so that we can make sure which topic has been included too much oftenand repeated, and which topic never appears. Finally we study the order of thetopics when compiling textbooks.Because of the research and analyses, we find the reason why the textbook ofFamily Album.U.S.A has been popular and widely used around30years. So weget the suggestions: we should use more communicative topics of the daily lifebecause those are the favorite of the foreign students. Then we should payattention to the text order in the books while compiling such as we can put thoseeasier topics in the former texts and learn those difficult topics in the end. Wehope our research can stimulate the experts to choose better topics and compilebetter textbooks.
