This thesis analyzes a Chinese textbook which titled The Hundred BestCharacters. It is written by Herbert Allen Giles and was published in year1918. Theauthor was a famous sinologist, taught Chinese in Cambridge University for35yearsand made a great contribution to Chinese language teaching.The first chapter helps the readers to know the intent of choosing the title and themeaning of doing this research, and looks back the general situation of the research ofEarly British diplomat’studying Chinese and the Giles’s and his linguistics works.In the second chapter, the main content is the Giles’ life, especially his Chineselearning and his writings on linguistics. This passage can be divided into two parts.The second part is studying the editing and The Giles’ views of Chinese.The third chapter analyzes the teaching content of The Hundred Best Characters.This passage can be divided into three parts. The main content is researching on,including the Chinese characters, Chinese words and Chinese grammar of TheHundred Best Characters.The fourth chapter emphasize on the evaluation on The Hundred Best Characters,based on principles.The last chapter concludes the main point of this thesis and summarizes theunique ideas of The Hundred Best Characters and tells something needs continuingresearching.
