Background:According to the latest statistical survey of the World Health Organization (WHO), there are at least half a billion people currently worldwide who suffer from various Psychological obstacle and diseases, accounting for one tenth of the world’s population. In China, a data from the Ministry of Health shows that the Incidence of Psychological obstacle in China has been listed in the first place, with the incidence rate from2.7%o of the1950s up to14.7%o of the1990s. In recent years, metal health problems of the middle school students become more and more serious and prominent, among which the junior secondary level is the high-risk period of the metal troubles.Objectives:In this paper, the author aims to help the junior middle school students go through the transformation period from elementary school to junior middle school and their adolescence safely by investigating the mental health status and the personality characteristics of the junior middle school freshmen in Tai’an City of Shandong Province, exploring relations between the mental health status and the personality characteristics of the junior middle school freshmen, discussing the factors of formation of the mental problems and analyzing the characteristics of their mental problems. It also provides basis of consultation and treatment for mental health problems.Data and Methods:2460junior middle school freshmen from39classes of9middle schools of counties and districts in Tai’an City have been tested with mental health scale for secondary school students (mhs-sss) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (for Children) by using the method of random stratified cluster sampling. All data are entered into the computer created an Excel database by the investigators and processed by SPSS13.0statistical analysis software. The measurement data are analyzed by variance and the comparison among groups of enumeration data are tested by chi-square. It is considered to be statistically significant when the difference is P<0.05.Main Results:(1)22.91%of the junior middle school freshmen have mild mental problems,3.68%of them have moderate problems and0.38%of whom have severe mental problems. Mean values of the factors in learning pressure and interpersonal relation are higher than the other factors among the mild and moderate abnormalities, and mean values of the factors of depression, anxiety and hostility higher than the other factors among the severe abnormality. Score difference of different mental health levels between ten mental health factors and the total scores has statistical significance.(2) Score difference among different genders and schools in the total scores of the mental health factors has no statistical significance; Boys are higher than girls in the three factors as maladjustment, psychological imbalance, and paranoia; whereas girls are higher than boys in learning pressure. Factors of depression and anxiety in the private schools have higher scores.(3) Scores of the four factors of the personality are all related to the mental health status:introversion and extroversion, and lie scale are negatively correlated to mental health status; psychosis and neuroticism are positively correlated to mental health status. The four factors of gender and personality are positively correlated. School property is positively correlated to psychosis and neuroticism, and four factors of personality are positively correlated. Psychosis scores of girls are higher than those of boys, whereas neuroticism scores of boys are higher than those of girls. Mean scores and member of girls with P>60are higher than those of boys, mean scores of boys with E≤40are lower than those of girls, and mean scores of girls with N≥60are higher than those of boys. Difference between scores of psychosis, introversion and extroversion and school property has statistical significance. Psychosis scores of private schools are higher than those of public schools, yet introversion and extroversion scores of public schools are higher than those of private schools.(4) Score difference between whether there are psychological problems and the four factors of personality has statistical significance. Scores of psychoticism and neuroticism of the students who have psychological problems are significantly higher than those without psychological problems. Scores of introversion and extroversion Students who have no psychological problems are higher than those with psychological problems; whereas scores of psychoticism and neuroticism are lower than those with psychological problems.Conclusions and Suggestions:(1) Mental health status of the junior middle school freshmen of Tai’an City cannot be ignored, for22.91%of the junior middle school freshmen have mild psychological problems, and4.06%of the junior middle school freshmen have moderate and severe psychological problems. They need for psychological help. In general, mental health status between gender and school property has no difference; learning pressure becomes the prime factor that generates mental health problems of the junior middle school freshmen, therefore, parents and teachers shall fully take into account of maladjustment brought by changes of school studies, environment, interpersonal relations and psychology to the students during the period from primary school to junior middle school, and direct them properly to adapt to the junior middle school life as early as possible to reduce incidence of psychological problems.(2) Gender, school property and mental health status are all related to personality of the junior middle school students:neuroticism and mental health are most closely related; psychosis scores of the junior middle school female freshmen are higher than those of boys, whereas neuroticism scores of boys are higher than those of girls; psychosis scores of the junior middle school freshmen of private schools are higher than those of public schools, whereas scores of introversion and extroversion of junior middle school freshmen of the public schools are higher than those of private schools; scores of psychosis and neuroticism of the students who have psychological problems are significantly higher than those who have no psychological problems. Therefore, it is an important task for the society, school and family to educate and mould personality as well as correct bad personality tendency of the junior middle school freshmen.
