In Chinese language, people use a series of words like "Jingran", "Fan’er", "Qishi", "Buiiao"...to express something happened unexpectedly, out of their anticipation, these words are so called "Unexpected Focus Markers". They are very subjective, often indicate the speakers’ideas, comments or attitudes, so they are not easy to acquire by foreign language learners.Guided by second language acquisition (ASL) and interlanguage theories, and based on both interlanguage materials and native Chinese novels, this thesis uses "statistical analysis" and "error analysis" to carry on a study on the acquisition of "Unexpected Focus Markers" by foreign students. The "Unexpected Focus Markers" discussed in this thesis include:Jingran, Juran; Fan’er, Fandao, Pianpian; Qishi, Shijingshang, Shishishang, Buliao, and Meixiangdao.The thesis is composed of seven chapters:Chapter One is a general introduction of the "Unexpected Focus Markers", its related research, theoretical and practical values of the selected topic.Chapter Two discusses the classification of "Unexpected Focus Markers". We sort "Unexpected Focus Markers" into 3 types by their discourse function and divide them into four groups according to their positions is a sentence.Chapter There summarizes the functions and usage of each "Unexpected Focus Markers" based on the existing researches.Chapter Four discusses the output volume of "Unexpected Focus Markers" in interlanguage materials, and makes a comparison with the statistics of native Chinese language materials.Chapter Five is the error analysis of the sentences with "Unexpected Focus Markers", we sort the errors into two major types, and also summarize the reasons why the learners made these mistakes.Chapter Six gives some suggestions on how to teach "Unexpected Focus Markers" according to the research results.Chapter Seven, it’s a conclusion of the thesis.
