Modal Adverbs are the difficult points for Chinese teaching as a second language. Foreign students including some of the English-speaking background often make different kinds of errors. The data in the paper are the words which have the meaning of "unexpected". Based on the theoretical thesis of inter-language and error analysis, this paper made an investigation on the using this Adverbs of English-speaking background students from the intermediate stage to the advanced stage. Combined with the error analysis of the Beijing Language University HSK of students corpus, we attempt to draw a conclusion on the features of out Putting of the "unexpected’modal Adverbs of English-speaking background students. There are four chapters in this paper:The first chapter is the introduction. It explains the definition of "unexpected". We divide the "unexpected" modal adverbs into two sub-categories, which are presented by "Jingran" and "Pianpian". Then, we generalizes many scholars’ research on the status, explain the method and the meaning of study, the source of the linguistics material.The second chapter is mainly about the survey analysis according questionnaires to know the motivation, altitude, learning skills of foreign students learning the "unexpected" modal adverbs. Test if they have already known how to use those words correctly.The third chapter mainly analyses the corpus. This part sums up the errors and analyses the reasons accord to some theory. The errors refer to four factors:the interference of mother tongue, over-generalization of the target language rules, the influence of learning environment and learning strategy.The fourth Chapter mainly bases on the results of preceding chapters and makes some personal teaching suggestions:reasonable arrangement of teaching materials and practical teaching methods. Then combine the analysis into the teaching design.
