In this paper, we discuss two aspects of directional complements----the semanticanalysis and error analysis. First, twenty-two directional verbs are analysed in thesemantic aspect at great length. On this basis, I collect the errors made by foreignstudents by means of a questionnaire, and refer to HSK Dynamic Composition Corpusof Beijing Language and Culture University as the data source of errors. Through theanalysis and conclusion, the errors of Chinese directional complements made by foreignstudents are mainly of two types: structural aspect of the errors and semantic aspect ofthe errors. Structural aspect of the errors is mainly concentrated in the locationrelationship between directional complement and object; semantic aspect of the errors isprimarily focused on the use of extended meaning of directional complement. At thesame time, based on Error Analysis theory, I make an in-depth study on the errors ofdirectional complements made by foreign students and explore the causes of the errorsfrom four aspects. Finally, I put forward several specific suggestions about the teachingpractice of the directional complements, which may provide certain reference forteaching Chinese as a foreign language.
