A Study On The Welfare Dilemma Of Impoverished Women In Urban China And Countermeasures

Urban poverty is a global problem, which inevitably exists both in developed and developing countries, and a series of social problems that rooted in poverty, are the concerns of all the Governments. In the context of economic reform and industrial restructuring, a new kind of poverty was generated in China and the problem of urban poverty was deteriorated. Apart from this, there are three factors, which made the urban poverty problem from bad to worse:the out-dated reformation of social security system, the urban-rural dual structure, and urbanization. When fronted with these risks, the urban impoverished women are more vulnerable to fall into poverty. So. the study of welfare status should following the framework of poverty research, just from a more specific angle of gender.In the foreign academic circles, it is already a relatively mature research area to study in to the poverty from the angle of gender. But in China, no matter in aspects of the urban poverty research and welfare of impoverished urban women, or in aspects of public policies, there exist a plenty of blind sides of gender research. Besides, many new circumstances and problems have emerged in the process of transitional growth and urbanization, so researching the poverty problem from gender is still valuable and practical.The dissertation is made up of five chapters. Firstly, related literatures are reviewed and the research background and methodologies are introduced; secondly, the basic information of urban female poverty is analyzed under the framework of "the feminization of poverty"; then there is a classification of urban impoverished women, and an overall analysis of the welfare of impoverished female is conducted among the three categories of the classification:fourthly, the leading factors of this phenomenon are analyzed from the prospective of social exclusion and social capital, the detrimental effects are studied as well; finally, some countermeasures are proposed to combat this problem and improve the welfare of urban impoverished women.
