Equation learning is a new leap forward of mathematics learning, is an important beginning of the transition from arithmetic to algebra. Over the years, algebra was considered to be on the science of the equation, it was thought like this before19th centuries. Its development is inseparable to equation. About the equation, its form is relatively simple, but the transition from arithmetic to the equation is an important leap forward of the cognizance of human. The equation plays a special role, we should strengthen the teaching of equation, and to enhance the penetration of this way of thinking. This paper attempts to investigate awareness and cognition of equation on pupils of Grade5and6by the method of questionnaires and interviews, and analyse the result of investigation, propose teaching suggestions.The final paper mainly consists of four parts:The preface of the first chapter introduces the origins of this paper, the significance of the study, and a literature review.The second chapter is research method, questionnaire design and research process. The primary investigation methods are questionnaire method and visitation method. The questionnaire design explains the intent of the questionnaire, the research process made it clear that the study of the specific implementation process. The third chapter is the analysis about results, divided into two parts: awareness problem and cognition problem. Cognition issues are divided into four parts:students’cognizance on the concept of equation, cognizance on the letter number, cognizance on the equation and on the application subject of the line equation, make the conclusion on the bases of horizontal analysis and vertical analysis on the students.The final chapter is conclusion and recommendation. Summarize the primary problems during the process of students’cognizance on the equation, conclude the factors which affect the students on the cognizance of the equation, and bring forward some advice on the teaching of equation in the elementary school.
