With the development of society and economy, higher education has become more and more important. As the driving force and knowledge pool for social development, higher education nurtures the training of various kinds of talents, provides support to society improvement and innovation. However, it has now become a worldwide phenomenon that the education fund shortage seriously constrains the development of higher education. Chinese higher education is no exception. Lack of education fund hinders the healthy growth of Chinese higher education. As the world largest economy, United States of America attaches great attentions to higher education. With the most developed private colleges and universities, USA has been quite successful in education fund collections. Statistics of U.S. higher education show that social donation contributes the most to the financial income of U.S. colleges and universities. This article starts from the research on the US higher education donations, takes Dartmouth College of the Ivy League as the case study and specifically analyzes the development of donations in Dartmouth College. The study is structured as five parts. Part one is the introduction of the study background, including the initiatives of the study, brief description of U.S. higher education donations, referenced domestic and oversea studies of the same topic, chosen method of study, etc. Part two explains the causes and lawsuit process of the well-known "Dartmouth College Case" and analyzes the impact of the "Dartmouth College Case" on U.S. higher education and donations. Part three is the presentation of how Dartmouth College attracts social donations by its flexible and multiple forms of donation policy. Part four discusses the sources and quantities of donations that generate great returns for the Dartmouth College, and the management of donated funds. Part five indicates that Chinese higher education shall learn from the success of Dartmouth College donations. This article aims at enriching the theory of Chinese higher education donations, guides the donation collecting and nurtures the healthy development of Chinese higher education donations.
