Translated foreign literary works appear in middle school text bookfor Chinese language course in China since1920, in the first set ofvernacular text book in China which is compiled by Beiping Hong&Zhongying He, published by the Commercial Press. From then on, atdifferent times, these works showed different educational function inmodern and contemporary Chinese Language Education, theteaching strategies changed accordingly.So, nowadays, in the globalization context, the reading instructionof translated foreign literary works in middle school Chinese languagecourse should shows the feature of the21th century. By observing, wecan see Chinese middle school students are living in a wholly openedcircumstance in China, The Intercultural Awareness is necessary andimportant for them to live and develop better, Chinese LanguageEducation should and is possible to take up the task of developingmiddle school students’ intercultural awareness. And there is largespace for whoever is working for Chinese Language Education toaccomplish the task.The main purpose of this thesis is discussing the development ofstudents’ Intercultural Awareness by reading instruction of translatedforeign literary works in Chinese middle school text books. The thesis tells:What is Intercultural Awareness in the context of Chinese LanguageEducation, Why we have to and are possible to develop students’Intercultural Awareness in Chinese Language Education, How toaccomplish the task, and How about the present condition ofdevelopment of students’ Intercultural Awareness.In the theoretical research, the theory of Interculturalcommunication and foreign language teaching are integrated intoChinese Language Education theory.In the application of Chinese course, the thesis offers middle schoolChinese teachers some thinking and strategies of developing students’Intercultural Awareness by reading instruction of those translatedforeign literary works in Chinese middle school text books. And givessome advices on development of Course standard, Text books Compiling, Developing Chinese Teachers’ teaching skill, from theperspective of development of students Intercultural Awareness as well.
