The institutional purpose and goals for Colleges and Universities is based onexecuting its basic functions while integrating its technological and humanismcharacteristics, employing distinctive thinking, methods and strategies to develop theinstitution’s own features within the context of institutional management,teaching,service and society and, to achieve the goals of institutional education.Under the current environment, the key of survival and development in the intensivecompetition for Higher vocational colleges is having their own characteristics.However, there is relatively obvious phenomenon of convergence in institutionalcharacteristics--many Colleges and Universities are not prompt to create their owncharacteristics and for some colleges, characteristic is in absence. How could Highvocational college change the current situation of lacking characteristic and exceedthe limits of imitation while creating its distinctive institutional features is atheoretical and practical problem. Moreover, it is a realistic problem and an importanthistorical problem. Therefore, this article employs a multiple analysing methodologythat includes historical research method and literature review, and further explores thesubject from theoretical, practical and historical perspectives.First, the article reviews and analyses the background and development of Highervocational colleges under the framework of historical materialism. It then approachesthe subject through discussing the theoretical foundation of institutionalcharacteristics. This article maintains that institutional characteristics is a perceivedadvantage by the public and is grown alongside the long-term development of theschools’ development of their own features and qualities, which represents thedifference and features of schools. The Higher vocational college has distinctive,high-quality, stable and integrative characteristics. Further, this article uses case studyand chooses a successful example of Hunan Communication Polytechnic College,analyzing and reviewing the composition of the contents of its characteristic.Institutional characteristics constituted by the institutional concept, learning andtraining model, subjects and curriculum design as well as aspects of construction,teaching crew, teaching content and management system. Lastly, a conclusion can bedrawn as that by learning from the experiences of successful individual case, highervocational colleges could create their institutional characteristics through a number of ways that embraces building high-quality school cultural, correctly positioning theirschool based on their own situations, integrating the local economic developmentadvantages into major and course design, constructing double-skill teachers group,improving hard ware construction, developing equal relationship between schoolsand enterprises, and therefore achieve the goal of sustainable development.
