A Study On Building World-class Universities Series Projects Of South Korea In21st Century

World-class university is the cradle of training senior specialized talents, whichalso gives birth to the major scientific and technological inventions and discoveries.Building a world-class university has become a common trend of most developingcountries and a few developed countries in21stcentury. Korea which country is notleading in many aspects stands out in this surging wave of reform of higher education.South Korea has launched a series of higher education projects including BK21Ⅰ,BK21Ⅱ, NURI, WCU considering with its own national conditions, and has achievedinitial results. This article aims to macro focus, micro start, detailing the engineeringand analysis, hoping to draw upon the valuable experience of building a world-classuniversity in China.The first part is an introduction about to determine the significance of the topicfrom the following three aspects: trend, significance, achievement. And then lists theresearches at home and abroad about projects in South Korea higher education.The second part is an introduction about the series projects’ reasons, from asys-tematic analysisof the higher education level,the national level and theinternational level.The third section details the three important elements of the systems engineeringexcellence, including the BK21project, the Nuri engineering and WCU project,ela-borated the main objectives of each project, funding, evaluation results andmanage--ment mode.The fourth part is an introduction about World-class Universities Project,including its starting reasons, target types, budget and selections, initial results. The fifth part analysis the three higher education projects as a whole body andsummaries the characteristics in five aspects.
