Currently, the education career of our nation has entered a new period ofimproving the quality of education in all aspects. The implement of quality-orientededucation demands the reform of teacher education. Obviously, the pre-serviceeducation of English teacher in normal university has made great contribution to theelementary education and higher education. With the development of social culture,economy and technology, our nation has stepped into the environment ofinternational cooperation and competition, the system and model of English teachereducation has seriously lagged behind.English education major in normal university has an important function incultivating and training eligible primary and secondary school English teachers.Course structure is the media of realizing educating objectives and the key ofensuring and improving the quality of education. On the one hand, since thedevelopment of society and discipline and the reform of English course in primaryand secondary school demand new qualities of future English teacher, we ought toreform the English teacher education in normal university. On the other hand, manystudents whose major is English language teaching find that what they have learnedin the normal university has little to do with the situation of primary and secondaryschool English teaching. The English teaching-oriented majors’ teaching method andskill is, to some extent, not very suitable for the primary and secondary schoolEnglish teaching. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is that the course systemin some normal university is unbalanced and the content of the course system isoutdated. Therefore, it is very necessary to reform the current course system ofEnglish education majors in normal university.The methodology of this thesis mainly includes literature review, text analysisand comparative study. This thesis will do comparative study of the course design ofsix normal universities in our country. First, this thesis will analyze the course designsof the six normal universities and discuss the advantages and shortcomings of eachcourse design. The problems of the current course design of English education major include: there is no unified teaching syllabus for the English education major; thecourse structure and content cannot meet the requirement of the cultivatingobjectives; the proportion of the course structure is not suitable for the fact that ithinders the English education major students’ self-development, and the teachingpractice is not enough for English education major students’ training of teaching skills,etc. Then, through a close observation of the course design of teacher education inadvanced foreign countries, this thesis will focus on the advantages and strengths oftheir course designs, including liberal and extensive general education courses,targeted and oriented professional course and pedagogical and practical educationcourses. Based on the analysis of the problems of the course design in our countryand the strengths of that in advanced foreign countries, this thesis finally providessome suggestions for the improvement of the course design of English educationmajors in our country, aiming at contributing to the course reform of normaluniversities in our country.
