Shanghai World Foreign Language Middle School (SWFLMS) is a privateschool specializing in English education. Since its establishment, SWFLMS hasmaintained the spirit of “facing the world, the future and modernization”, and hasactively adopted a motto of “active participation, studio practice, cooperation, andcourageous creativity (P&P, C&C).” SWFLMS’s objective is to cultivate an internationalperspective by offering China’s elite students with a distinctive and highlycompetitive English curriculum in a uniquely progressive learning environment.In2007SWFLMS established Stratification English education within eachyear level to address the disparities of incoming freshmen’s previous educationalexperience; English learning foundations, learning capabilities and quality ofeducation.Stratification education is aimed at guiding students to take initiative fortheir own education, fostering their deductive and innovative reasoning by nurturingcharacter growth and development. Students are encouraged to continually strive inpersonal development and always seek opportunities for improvement. Regardless ofa student’s previous educational background or opportunities, all students are givenindividualized support to achieve success. Stratification education is founded on thebasis of a quality and comprehensive system, which promotes a sense ofaccomplishment and self-confidence when facing difficulties and embodying thephilosophy “Anyone can achieve success and thrive.”Since the commencement of stratification education, SWFLMS hascontinuously researched and innovated techniques to address specific issues; achieveoverall teaching and year level goals, determine teaching materials, use leadingteaching methods and approaches, improve evaluation methods, accumulateknowledge, and analyze issues that arise. Stratification education has proven to beeffective for both students’ and teachers’ development, facilitating educators toconstantly revise effective teaching techniques and through collaboration achieveeducational success.
