The educational objectives of higher vocational schools are position-relevant and practical,which objectively requires students to have a proper position for their majors and enhance their specialty identity. How much the students identify their majors is related to positive development of the schools and the successful completion of the study tasks. It also has a direct effect on the future career development. even the storage of human resourcethat has proper majors as well as the competitive powerof a country. Especially in the current situation of practical personnel much-needed in the process of our economic society development, making a study of students’specialty identity can find some problems existing in the higher vocational education from the side perspective and provide reference for the quality enhancement of the higher vocational education.In recent years, experts and scholars from abroad and at home have carried widely discussion and research about the specialty identity from multi-disciplinarity aspects such as sociology, psychology. However, foreign researches about the specialty identity mainly focus on some professional specialty group which regard the specialty identity and the professional identity as the same and researches about the specialty identity of universities are very fewer. Although the specialty identity researches have already raised domestic concern, research object is mainly about undergraduate students not about students in vocational colleges.Based on this, after reading relevant literature and documents for reference, considering the characteristics of higher vocational schools and modifying Qin Panbo’s questionnaire, this research designs its own questionnaire for students in vocational colleges and launches an investigation on four higher vocational schools in Y city of Shanxi province, namely Shanxi Water Conservancy Vocational and technical college, Yuncheng Agricultural Vocational and Technical College, Yuncheng Infant Normal College and Yuncheng Technology Institute. Through making questionnaire and interview about students’specialty identityof the four higher vocational schools, the paper carries on further research about its dimensions, current situation, development features and its relations with external environment. The results are as follows. (1)The specialty identity of higher vocational schools includes four dimensions such as cognition, emotionality, behavior and adequacy;(2)The whole specialty identity degree of vocational colleges students in Y city of Shanxi province is above the average(M=3.54),in which the score of adequacy dimension is lower than that of other three dimensions;(3) There are significant differences on the sex, specialty, school, grade and so on about specialty identity of higher vocational college students in Y in Shanxi Province, but no significant differences are found in the education degree of parents, only-child or not and origin of students;(4)The specialty identity degree of vocational colleges students in Y city of Shanxi province presents a positive correlation between the macro social environment and the micro educational environment. In the macro social environment, the specialty identity degree of vocational colleges students has a moderate correlations with the occupational reputation, employment rate, salary and self-realization, in which the correlation with the occupational reputation is higher than others. In the micro educational environment, The specialty identity degree of vocational colleges students has correlations with students’study and life, in which the correlations with study is higher than life. In life dimension, teaching has the highest correlations with the specialty identity degree and at teaching aspect the teaching construction and reform has the greatest influence on the specialty identity degree.According to the individual characteristics and primary factors of the external circumstance that would produce an effect on specialty identity of higher vocational college students, we come up with some suggestions to promote the level of specialty identity of higher vocational college students according to the specific differences in specialty identity of higher vocational college students:First, to strengthen students’ psychological counseling, to guide them to adjust mindset, to promote ability of self-adaptation;Second, to strengthen the humanities education of higher vocational college students of science, to expand their horizon, to promote overall quality;Third, to strengthen publicity, to show their characteristics of school, to expand social cognition degree and influence;Fourth, to take market requirement as guide and to adjust specialty settings flexibly; Fifth, dominated by industry, we can research multiple classes;Sixth, to increase government intervention, to promote practical teaching model of cooperation between school, government and enterprise.
