Adaptive design has been proposed for many years from aspect of theAdaptive design has been proposed for many years in architecture design theoryresearch such as climate adaptability, functional adaptability, structuraladaptability, etc. But all viewpoints mentioned above only represent one aspectof adaptive design. A comprehensive, systematical and standardized definition onadaptive design does not exist now. According to some general conceptions, adaptive design means the design of architectural space must suit surroundingenvironment. It does make sense, but it is still not comprehensive. Environmentcontains natural environment and artificial environment. They influence eachother, and the interaction also exists. Environment keeps on changing as timeinfluence exist. Therefore, predictable architectural design is required to ensureadaptive design suits the change of environment better, so that stablearchitectural space is maintained during a period.Large commercial buildings have better competitiveness in terms of productscale and quality of service. They are gradually popular in society. Outdoorenvironment of large commercial buildings is one of main components of wholecommercial environment. It has commercial function, organizes both internal andexternal traffic, and connects the urban outdoor public space. Therefore, it is anindispensable part of whole architecture environment. Outdoor environmentdesign is always a weak part of architecture design in cold region cities in northChina. So, a exploratory positive meaning is shown when adaptive design theoryis combined to develop the outdoor environment design of commercial buildingsin cold region cities. This paper summarized outdoor environment of large commercial buildingsat first. According to the viewpoint of interface division and spatial composition, the research contains four parts: vertical interface, level interface, gray space andspatial form. Research was focused on important components of each part.Questions were proposed after consideration of actual situation. The relativetheories of climate adaptation and terrain adaptation were also combined toachieve a better design method. This research will provide advantages to theoutdoor environment design of commercial buildings in cold region cities.
