Report On The Translation Of "People Of SCUT"

This is a report on a translation project. The source text comes from a series of newsfeature articles "People of SCUT" on the news network of South China University ofTechnology (hereafter referred to SCUT). Launched by the Publicity Department of PartyCommittee of SCUT,"People of SCUT" is a series of news features introducing renownedprofessors, famous alumni, outstanding teachers, students and work staff whose excellentlives and stories resonate with SCUT’s pulse. It has published more than100issues. Theauthor is responsible for the translation of five articles of this series.This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter One gives a brief introduction of thebackground, objectives and significance of this translation project and the report structure.Chapter Two is the analyses of the source text, including genre, context and linguistic features.Chapter Three gives detailed analyses of the translation practice, including pre-translationpreparations and the main difficulties encountered as well as the methods and skills applied tosolve the difficulties. The main difficulties are the translations of headlines and subheadlines,of rhetoric devices, of culture-loaded words, institution and newspaper names and of complexsentences. The translation methods and skills include adaptation, omission, annotation, literaltranslation, free translation, domesticating, restructuring and splitting and so on. Chapter Fouris the conclusion of the translation in which the author’s reflections, lessons learned from thetranslation and insufficiencies are summarized.In this era of information, online news translation becomes increasingly significant. Thetranslation of "People of SCUT" is a protracted task，requiring more and more students to joinin it. The author sincerely hopes this thesis would be helpful to translators of this series.
