A Reflective Research Report On The C-E Translation Of Makonde Art

The present thesis is mainly about the reflection and discussion on the styletranslation of Makonde art under the direction of fidelity criterion and the Skopostheory. The source text tells the stories of Li Songshan and his wife Han Rongfluently and smoothly, attracting readers to read without any stop. To get this stylereflected in the translated text, the author gives priority to the coherence of the wholetext and the selection of words during the translation process. Emotional factors arealso an important concern because it is the duty for translators to convey the emotionto readers.The process of my retrospection can be generalized as follows. At first, theauthor makes a brief introduction to the research background and relevant theoriesand analyzes its stylistic and linguistic characteristics. Then follows the overview ofthe translation process where some of the reflection results are presented. Bearingthose stylistic characteristics in mind, the author adopted proper strategies andmethods to make the translated text meet the requirement of fidelity. They arepresented and illustrated in the fourth part, the most important part of this thesis. Itfalls into the following aspects: First, the author evaluates the problems and contrastsdifferent translations for further improvement. Second, the author discusses theselection of words in this informal text. Third is about the efforts to meet thecoherence of the translated text. Generally four kinds of strategies are used:1. Shift ofperspective;2. Change of sentence structure;3. Additional words for furthercoherence;4. Utilization of passive voice. Fourth, in order to attract more readers foradvertising, the author also adopts some methods to represent the emotional factor inthe source text. The last part is the conclusion.The author presents what she has gained from the translation and reflection,summarizing the high lights and the weaknesses of this translation as well as her goalin the future. In this text, the author shows the process of running into problems,analyzing problems and seeking for solutions to resolve them. It is hoped that thesewill be conductive to other translation learners and lovers.
