With the enhancement of China’s comprehensive national power, the interactions between the domestic institutions of higher education and universities in the United States become more and more frequent. It is of great significance for the development of higher education in China to understand the current situation and get the latest developing trend of higher education in the United States. Therefore, the translating of similar annual reports released by the authorities of United States becomes one of the popular translation projects in the future. Featured with extensive subjects and large space, the translation quality directly impacts on our understanding of the current situation abroad in specific fields and the formulation and implementation of related systems.Commissioned by the Secretariat of Dean of Association of Chinese Graduate Schools (ACGS), this project is to translate the2012educational annual report The Condition of Education2012:Postsecondary Education (English-Chinese) released by the U.S. National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which aims to help the ACGS to get a better understanding of the status of the graduate education in the U.S. and to lay the foundation for further research by experts at home. The source text is in PDF format, approximately15,000words. The project completion is made by a small team led by the author. Through the analysis of translating process and cases, the report focuses on three aspects that the translator should pay attention to when translating the annual reports:how to guarantee the quality of the translation text via reasonable pre-translational analysis, how to achieve the accuracy and the communicative function of the target text via text type analysis and language conversion techniques, and how to implement the translator’s sense of responsibility and communication.
