A Report On The Translation Of Sustainable, Resource Efficient Cities-Making It Happen! By Mark Swilling

This is a translation report based on the second part of Sustainable, ResourceEfficient Cities——Making It Happen!, a research report published by the UnitedNations Programme in2012. Its publication draws much applause and supportfrom such international organizations as the United Nations Human SettlementsProgramme and the World Bank. Achlm Stelner, United Nations Under-SecretaryGeneral and Executive Director, wrote the forward for the report and commentedthat this publication “highlights genuine opportunities for city leaders and supportsits arguments through a set of inspirational case studies of cities that havesuccessfully improved their transition to sustainability.”The report aims to formulate a broader framework of integration which isrequired for cities to transition to a sustainable, resource efficient development andto realize green urban economic growth, of which the second section outlines thesustainability challenges and choices, exploring particularly infrastructure optionsavailable for realizing sustainable, resource-efficient cities in the building,transport, waste and water sectors.Guided by translation theories put forward by Peter Newmark, the translatoraims to convey the messages of the source text to the targeted readers, bearing inmind the principle of attempting to produce on readers an effect as close aspossible to that obtained on the readers of the original. As required by the featuresof the selected material, the translator will also try to ensure the faithfulness andfluency of the translation version by taking advantage of various translationtechniques.This translation report comprises five parts. Part one is about translationproject description including the background, significance and the purposes. In the second part, the translator brings a detailed introduction about the author, thecontents and language features of the selected source text. Part three focuses on theanalysis of difficulties in translation practice, such as terms and complex sentences.Translation theories involved as well as translation techniques will be elaboratedand highlighted in part four. The last part will conclude the experience gained bythe translator and the problems that need for improvement.
