The World Bank is one of the major inter-governmental financial institutions in the world with the mandate of assisting developing countries to eradicate poverty and promote sustainable development. Formal and informal reports aimed at knowledge sharing and development strategy discussion by the World Bank fall into two categories: annual reports and special reports. In February2012, China2030: Building a Modern, Harmonious and Creative High-income Society, a special report composed by the World Bank and the Research and Development Center of the State Council of China was published under the cooperation of the Chinese government and the World Bank, focusing on forecasting and analyzing China’s economic future. The report is468-pages long, with one major report and five supporting reports, covering almost all spheres of the Chinese economy and society and spelling high reference value for China to tap its growth potential during the next decade and realizing high-quality and sustainable development. As a result, the report received high attention in China. Because the Chinese version of the report is translated from the original text instead of complete rewriting, the way we translate it and which translation theories we follow is of great significance.Economic forecasting report is a kind of practical writing that serves to predict future economic trends through comparative analysis of economic data. Reports of this kind are generally objective, professional and precise. This kind of text is unique in vocabulary, sentence structure and overall style, thus calling for proper translation theories to guide its translation in order to produce a faithful version. In light of the skopos theory, this paper analyzes the Chinese translation of China2030.The thesis draws the conclusion that the skopos theory can act as a guide for the translation of English economic forecasting report in future practices.
