With the rapid development of modern society, the situation of educationhaschanged considerably.The reform on thenew curriculummeetsthe requirements of time. The reformadvocates the cultivation of students’ autonomouslearning abilities and the creation of innovative classrooms.This idea is relevant to theKnowledge BuildingTheory, whichoriginated fromprofessor Scardamalia and Bereiter ofTorontoUniversity, Canada in the1980’s. In order to explore students’ independent learningprocessunderthe teachingtheory of knowledgebuilding,this paperstudied the different phasesof autonomous learning process, taking28pupils fromClass2,grade3inNanjing BaiYunyuan elementary school as subjects, who were having the class of Science at that time.This paper studies thethree phases of autonomous learning process:planning, behaving, and self-reflecting.During the three phases, the papercollected data with the methods of observation, interviewand questionnaire and so on. In the planning phase, the students’ learning motivation was highly activated.They would set learning goals for themselves, and chose appropriate learning strategies independently. In the behaving phase, through the students’ performance in classes and the contents in the KF, people can see the pupils’understanding hadachieveda higher level, and had got more mature knowledge. In the self-reflecting phase, pupils would take self-summary, self-evaluation and causal attribution. Pupilsmonitoredtheir learning process and wouldadjust themselveswhen finding deviating from normal tracks.Analysis on the data which was collected in the three phases showed that after one year’s learning under knowledge building theory,the pupils’ learning motivation has improved significantly, and some students havedevelopedsmoothly ineach phase without teacher’s guide. Besides,there are some students that can achieve a smooth transition in thesethreephases with the help of teachers.This paper described the lawof autonomous learningprocess, and clarifiedthedevelopment situation ofpupils’ autonomous learning ability in current elementary schools as well as the way to cultivate students’ autonomous learning abilities.It will lay a foundation for teaching Chinese childrenwith the knowledge building theoryand developing pupils’autonomous learning abilitiesunder the network environment.
