After the New Music Curriculum Standards was issued in2004, new music textbooks have spread to the primary and secondary schools in the context of further reforming basic education curriculum and providing competence-oriented education. Compared with the traditional framework for designingteaching materials, the new teaching materials achieve breakthroughs and indicate that the music teaching materials for China’s secondary school progress enormously. The basic education reforms have entered a new stage for reviewing the experience and keeping up the momentum. While being used as the important means of providing music coursesat the secondary schools, the new teaching materials show their advantages. But new problems also emerge that need to be improved. These materials can be used more effectively via careful analysis and investigation. Furthermore, it can provide insights into the further growth of the music teaching materials and the further implementation of the music curriculum reforms for China’s secondary schools.The secondary school music textbookMusic Appreciationpublished by Hunan Art Publishing House is chosen as the subject. The text analysisisperformed. The present situation of its application and efficacy in Yueyang is investigated. Recommendations are offered to further reviseMusic Appreciation and to guide the teachers on the application and understanding of the new teaching materials.The organization of this paper is as follows:(1)Introduction presents the background, contents and methodologies for investigating Music Appreciation;(2)the music teaching materials used in Hunan are analyzed in terms of ideas, systems, contents and presentation;(3) the investigation process is described, and the data of the application and efficacy of the teaching materials are statistically analyzed;(4)based on analysis, investigation, the basic laws for improvingmusic teaching materials and the fresh ideas in reforming the music education, recommendations are offered on the further revision of the high school teaching materials.
