The current society demands a large number for high-quality skilled people, but the graduates of vocational higher education institutions in China have difficulties finding jobs, which shows that there is still a certain gap between the quality of the graduates and the personnel requirement of enterprises. The aim of the education in vocational higher education institutions is to cultivate high-quality technical and skilled talents, and practical teaching is an important way to train high-quality technical and skilled people. After more than ten years of development of vocational higher education institutions, vocational education has transformed from the stage of expansion into the stage of promoting its inner quality. Therefore, this research focuses on how to improve the level of practical teaching in vocational higher education institutions to cultivate talents who can meet the needs of the society.Through the means of questionnaires to know the situation, to find the problems and then analyze them, this essay did a thorough study in GN Agriculture Vocational and Technical College which involved all aspects of the practical teaching. In her own teaching work, the author observed what were in need of improvements and how to improve. In addition, a thematic discussion was organized with other teachers to improve the author’s improvement scheme. Then exploring continuously in work practice, observing the results and thus selecting the better methods to use, the author put forward an improvement scheme. Based on all above-mentioned work, the author proposed feasible strategies from six aspects, i.e. hardware environment, resources of teaching staff, teaching materials, teaching patterns, evaluation system, cooperation between schools and enterprises, hoping to avail the development of practical teaching in vocational higher education institutions.This essay contains three parts. The introduction is the research background, the definition of related concepts and the domestic and foreign research on practical teaching in vocational higher education institutions. The second part is the investigation of the present teaching mode in vocational higher education institutions, summarizing the problems through the questionnaire, interviews and discussion, and analyzing the reasons. The third part puts forward optimizing strategies of practical teaching in vocational higher education institutions:1. The development of resource input channels, and improvement of infrastructure environment;2. The improvement of "double certificates teachers" growing soil, cultivating excellent teachers;3. Industry experts’ help in writing the practical materials, improving the practical course system;4. The changes of the traditional training mode, developing students’comprehensive ability;5. Establishment of scientific evaluation system, implementing dynamic monitoring and multi-evaluation;6. The improvement of the mechanism of school-enterprise cooperation, strengthening enterprises’ educational function.
