In the background of knowledge economy and globalization, innovationhas become the crucial force for social and economic development in moderncity. Innovation activities have decisive significance for urbandevelopment in the future. Nowadays, industry is an indispensablecomponent in Chinese industry structure. Hence, the importance ofinnovation activity in industry is self-evident, and industrialinnovation will become a hotspot and key-point in urban research.In this research, we view288central cities in Chinese urban systemas research objects, investigating Chinese urban industrial innovationactivity separately in two sides-urban industrial innovation efficiencyand urban industrial innovation capability.Firstly, this study bases on literatures and monographs which relateto industrial innovation, industrial innovation efficiency, industrialinnovation activity and the likes, reviewing their development processand characteristic and summarizing relative theories as well.In term of urban industrial innovation efficiency, we do generalanalysis on urban industrial innovation input by examining itsorganizational structure, human resources and capital, as well asanalysis on urban industrial innovation output by inquiring its newproductions and patents. By setting up the index system of urbanindustrial innovation efficiency and using the Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA), this research quantitative tests Technical Efficiency(TE), PureTechnical Efficiency(PTE)and Scale Efficiency(SE)for each city.Combining the score of Pure Technical Efficiency and Scale Efficiency,we induce the pattern of urban industrial innovation in China and observeit spatial distribution for all central citiesIn term of urban industrial innovation capability, this paperestablishes the index system of city industrial innovation capability, evaluating the situation and scores of urban industrial innovationcapability for all central cities in Chinese urban system by exploitingFactor Analysis. In according with their comprehensive scores, we divideall cities into5types of industrial innovation city. Moreover, wediscuss agglomeration status and spatial relations of urban industrialinnovation capability by the Spatial Auto-correlation Analysis.Finally, through comparing results of urban industrial innovationefficiency and urban industrial innovation capability, this researchobserves spatial pattern of industrial innovation activity for centralcities in Chinese urban system from these two sides separately. And wecomprehensively conclude their laws and characteristics of spatialpattern.
