Smart grid is an important infrastructure to ensure national energy supply. Besides, it connects multiple network to infrastructure, and plays a pivotal role in promoting a leapfrog development of infrastructure. Meanwhile, smart grid integrates multiple technologies including new energy, intellectual, information and network, which will widely drive the development of China’s strategic emerging industry and economic transformation and upgrading. It’s significant to develop smart grid. In recent years, China’s enterprises have made a series of major breakthroughs in many respects, such as theoretical research, technological innovation, equipment development, standard establishment, construction of engineering and research ability.The on-line monitoring technology of electrical equipment is the most important application in smart grid, which is the key technical difficulty in building smart substation for the strategy on contributing strong and smart grid. The online monitoring unit can achieve real-time status of major equipment and vital parameters. It mainly includes the chromatographic data of transformer oil, partial discharge of combined electrical apparatus and the full current of arresters. It provides a basic data support for the equipment management. The preliminary decisions will then be made via system analysis to the real-time status information, and the self-diagnostic function of the smart substation will be achieved.The current situation of smart grid and on-line monitoring technology were summarized in this paper. Meanwhile, the application and prospect of on-line monitoring technology in smart substation were analyzed in multiple fronts.
