As the city scale expanding and the rapid development of science and technology, all kinds of complex types, diverse layouts and huge scope are built largely. At the same time, environmental problems of the buildings are increasingly prominent. In urban residential area, all that the pollutant diffusion, the efficiency of natural ventilation, the heat dissipation, the wind pressure of building surface and the comfort and safety of wind at pedestrian height are closely related to their internal environmental conditions, which has resulted to the attention of the outdoor wind environment in residential district. How to create a good outdoor wind environment for residential district, and provide residents with safe, healthy, comfortable and energy-saving outdoor wind environment is becoming a hot spot of current research. There are many factors which affect the outdoor wind environment, such as the layouts of the form, the geometry of the building, the wind direction and geomorphic conditions in different regions and so on, but for any city, the geomorphic condition and the direction and velocity of wind are can’t change, but the layout of the architecture form and the size of construction are really can be changed. So the reasonable layout and the architectural size not only play a big role to create a good environment for the wind, but also are the important parameters to study the wind environment. This paper mainly studies Xi’an outdoor wind environment in residential district from the perspective of architectural layout and building size.There are three kinds of methods which are field observation, wind tunnel test and computer numerical simulation to be the most commonly used for residential outdoor wind environment research at pedestrian height. But compared to other two methods, the computer numerical simulation is used widely because of which has many advantages, such as its low cost, short cycle, the simulation results can be shown visually and directly and so on. This article mainly uses the Phonics software to carry out the numerical simulation of Xi’an outdoor wind environment at pedestrian height.In this paper, through summarizing and simplifying different layout form of Xi’an district, we can get four practical architectural layout models, namely the determinant, inclined column type, staggered type and hybrid. First of all, according to the meteorological parameters of Xi’an, the paper studies the outdoor wind environment of four kinds of typical layout when the buildings are in different directions respectively for N, WN, EN. And it discusses the different directions of effect on wind environment in residential district. Then based on the four kinds of typical residential area in direction of N, I builds 48 models with different geometric parameters and uses Phonics software to numerical simulation of the wind environment in order to discuss the influence of different parameters on the typical residential wind environment.Through the analysis of simulation results finally, the Paper gets some of the conclusions about that building layout and geometry size effect on residential area outdoor wind environment. These can provide a certain theoretical basis and the reference value to the early period of urban construction and community layout planning, so avoiding the impact of the construction of blindness on residential environment construction.
