The establishment of a high-speed, two-way, real-time, integrated communication system is the basis for the realization of smart grid. The smart grid in the communication technology field mainly focus on two aspects. One is the opening communication architecture, which forms a environment of plug and play and make the power network communicate between components. The another is the unified technical standards which can realize the seamless communication between all sensors, intelligent electronic equipment and application systems. The concentrator is the key of meter reading system in smart grid, which plays the role of connecting link and is the focus of the study.Paper finds that the concentrator in the market is mainly based on the IPv4 by analyzing the reading system at home and abroad and the research status of concentrator. But IPv4 addresses will be exhausted and can’t provide more address. IPv6 has infinite address space, which has high transmission efficiency, fast speed, high network security and can realize each equipment of the grid can own an IP address. IPv6 has the characteristics of automatic assignment of stateless address, which can support the new devices to connect to the network and truly realize the plug and play function.Paper introduces the design process of smart grid concentrator based on the IPv6 in detail, including the system design, the hardware design, the software design of concentrator. The concentrator uses the mini2440 development board whose core is S3C2440 processor based on ARM9. The system design mainly in detail introduces the connection between host, concentrators, routers, smart meter and the function of each part and how they complete the communication. Then the system design also introduces the protocol conversion between 376.1, 376.2, IPv6, 645 in detail. The hardware design mainly completes the design of IPv6 module design, GPRS module design, Flash memory design, SDARM storage design and power supply. The software design mainly includes the transplantation of Linux kernel, the transplantation of U-boot, the establishment of cross environment and the protocol conversion program design. The smart grid concentrator based on IPv6 can supply an efficient and stable work, which makes each meter have IP Address. IPv6’s network security is higher and transmission efficiency is more faster than IPv4.
