It is known that translation has long been considered as a hard nut.It demands the conveyance of exact meaning. The translator shoulddevote to mastering the characteristics of languages better. Bycomparison, the translator enables to find out the characteristics oflanguages, expressing exactly in the translation. The ContrastiveLinguistics has been attached more importance in recent years. In thecontrastive study of English and Chinese languages, apart from thecontrast of surface structure, linguists should pay more attention to thecontrast of semantic structure, which is concerned with the relationshipbetween language and thought.Translation is not a conversion between languages but a conversionbetween different thought patterns. This thesis analyzes the maindissimilarities of the thought patterns in English and Chinese as well asits reflections on the linguistic expressions, focusing on the influence ofthe thought pattern on the translation of sentence and discourse byexamples. This thesis adopts methods such as comparison, reasoning togeneralize the thought pattern is a non-ignorable factor in the translation.In general, the discussion on the differences of the thought patterns is adeeper aspect for translation study, which enables the translator to beaware of the importance of the thought pattern and is helpful for the translation practice.
