An Exploration Into Condensed Interpretation Under The Requirement Of The Client

This paper is not only a report of consecutive interpretation but also tries to explore into thefeasibility and methods of condensed interpreting under the requirement of the client as well asits enlightenment to MTI teaching. The author describes her interpreting practice at the2013TAFISA Certified Leadership Course in Sport for All. Taking the trainees’ statements at the paneldiscussion as cases, the paper analyzes condensed interpreting under the requirement of theclient.The paper reviews the three stages of this consecutive interpretation task, includingpreparing for the task, performing the task, and packaging after the task and makes a detaileddescription of every stage. The paper mainly focuses on the key word “condensed interpretation”and picks some typical cases to discuss and analyze whether condensed interpretation should beadopted or not in this practice.Through the description of the task and case analysis as well as discussions on condensedinterpreting, the paper draws the following conclusions: Firstly, preparation is very important,especially when the interpreter is to interpret for an event covering topics he/she is not familiarwith. Secondly, condensed interpretation should not only be applied under the requirement of theclient but also be applied under the initiative of the interpreter while ensuring integrity of theinformation. Apart from the principles of “brevity”,“objectivity” and “logicality”, one shouldalso follow the principle of “moderateness” in doing condensed interpreting. Thirdly, condensedinterpreting skills should be trained in MTI classes.
