| Students of five-year higher vocational education have weak and poor Englishbases. English education for them also becomes the focus of attention paid by manyhigher vocational English teachers in their research. As a teaching method withstudents’ language activities as the center and with cultivation of students’ languagecommunicative ability as the objective, the communicative teaching method gainspopularity among many English teachers. They take it as an effective kind of trial incultivating students’ comprehensive communicative ability, enriching class activitiesand motivating students’ study initiative.Aiming at the implementation of the communicative teaching method in five-yearhigher occupational education, the paper makes the relevant investigation reports oneffects obtained in four-month communicative teaching among three classes in theinstitute as well as150students and13English teachers through a questionnairemethod and an interview method. The paper also analyzes the following problems.1. How about the understanding and acquaintance of teachers and students in thecommunicative teaching method during the five-year higher occupational Englishteaching?2. How about the acceptability of teachers and students in implementation of thecommunicative teaching method during the five-year higher occupational Englishteaching?3. Are there problems existing in the application of the communicative teachingmethod during the five-year higher occupational English teaching? What are thefactors causing these problems?It is shown through investigation data that the society pays the relatively littleattention to English study of five-year higher occupational students while theutilization and popularization of the communicative teaching method is relatively weak.As for five-year higher occupational students, development in reading, writing andgrammar is easily ignored during the study process, and they have high dependence onteachers. Teachers feel quite helpless in teaching grammar and vocabulary for studentsduring the teaching process and their own quality also needs to be improved.Through generalization and summarization, the author tries to put forward somefeasible countermeasures. The whole society shall pay attention to improvement in theability of listening and speaking in English; and some big discussion activities shall often be organized and implemented. Teachers shall deepen their own understanding ofthe English communicative teaching method; combine theoretical ideas of the Englishcommunicative teaching method with actual situations of English study for the higheroccupational students; combine the communicative teaching method and a grammarteaching method which have very strong complementarities organically; and strengthentheir own ability in mastering and controlling class rhythms in a targeted manner. Asfor students, they shall adjust their attitude, overcome their lack of self-confidence andcultivate the good English studying habits. They can obtain better development onlythrough comprehensive development and persistent insistence. |
