A Report On The Translation Of The Signal And The Noise

Translation asks for translators to make choices, and there must be some certain translation purposes which are used to fulfill the intended functions. In expository essays, there are vivid images and rigorous logic, persuading people with emotions and convincing people by reasons. Forms, emotions and reasons are all included in the entity of argumentation and literature. Thus, how to describe the event accurately and express the profound ideas and penetrating argumentations becomes the most difficult part of the report.This report is based on the translation of Chapter Eight of the book, The Signal and the Noise initiated by CITIC and organized by Ms. Hu Xiaojiao. This is an introduction, research and summary of the translation procedure.This report consists of five major parts:introduction, translation task description, translation procedure description, case analysis and summary. The first part gives a definition and the significance of translation. Then, the specific task of the translating report is introduced. The following two parts give an overall description of the task, including the requirements from the entrusting part, some background information of the book, and preparations, implementation and proofreading process for the task. The case analysis presents the most important part of the report. It discusses the problems and solutions occurred in the translation. First of all, it analyses the textual characteristics. Second, various translation methods are employed to make the target language match the source language under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory from the perspective of words, sentences and texts, aiming to achieve the equivalence between target language and source language. Finally, the author discusses the structure, translating methods and the innovation points of the report. And the summary and conclusion about the problems and mistakes in the translation are presented.
