With ground-breaking improvements in modern information and communicationtechnologies, the trend of economic globalization, however debatable it is, haspenetrated into everywhere. It is generally acknowledged, if has not been a fact, thatboth international economic news reports and their trans-editing, being treated asideal channels for transmitting economic information, play essential parts in theprocess of economic globalization. Yet, in fact, English-Chinese (E-C) economicnews trans-editing, which requires the techniques of translation, news writing, editing, and relevant economic knowledge, has for a long time been receiving little to noattention as a result of its interdisciplinary characteristics, and it has apparently beenmarginalized by the fields of journalism, communication and translation studies inChina. The Global Times (Chinese-language version,《环球时报》)is an internationalnewspaper under the auspices of the official newspaper of the Chinese CommunistParty, The People’s Daily (《人民日报》). It is one of the two newspapers in mainlandChina that can directly publish reports from foreign news institutions (the other one isReference News,《参考消息》). Since its launch in1993, the Global Times has nowdeveloped into a quality newspaper, enjoying a wide range of popularity. From theyear when China set up its goal of building a socialist market economy, just one yearbefore the emerge of the Global Times, China’s general public have engagedthemselves in the global economy, and showed more concern about the globaleconomic information. Thus, the Global Times, with two reporting principles,“to bethere” and “to tell the truth”, has attracted a large number of readers in China. Itstrans-edited economic news constructs a vision of global economy for domesticaudience. This paper is innovative in exploring into the economic news E-C trans-editingwith the case of the Global Times. Based on Mona Baker’s narrative framingstrategies, and Vinay and Darbelnet’s model, as well as Venuti’s foreignizaition anddomestication theory, this study will aim to elicit the trans-editing methods, ortechniques which the trans-editors of the Global Times employ when conducting the linguistic transferring and handling intercultural problems in economic newstrans-editing.It is also of vital practical significance. The research result shows thattrans-editors of the Global Times have applied various trans-editing strategies indealing with the English economic news headlines and bodies. They are not merelypassive receivers of assignments for their clients or initiators; instead they maysurpass their traditional “invisible” role and signal their narrative positions intrans-editing from time to time in an effort to reconstruct the economic reality andmaintain the social stability. With respect to the specific trans-editing strategies employed in the process oftrans-editing the economic news, the study finds that as to the news headlines, thetrans-editors are actively using the framing narrative strategies and oblique strategiesto guarantee the conciseness and readability of the trans-edited economic newsarticles. Then in the process of trans-editing the news bodies, the results show thatselective appropriation, repositioning of participants, and literal translation areeffectively used by trans-editors. Also, the study indicates that some additionaltrans-editing strategies are required apart from Mona Baker’s framing narrativestrategies and Vinay and Darbelnet’s model.Overall, domestication is preferred in economic news trans-editing lexically andsyntactically with most culture-laden words foreignized. The study’s limitations andsuggestions for further research are presented in the conclusion section.
