As the famous Roman historian Tacitus (A.D.56-120) once said:"You should compare yourself with others if you want to know yourself". The great writer of the Northern Song Dynasty Su Shi (1037-1101) wrote in his book《Inscription on the wall of the Xilin temple》:"Of mountain Lu we cannot make out the true face, for we are lost in the heart of the very place". We often get to understand one thing by comparing it to another one. As only the comparison makes it possible to differentiate things; that difference makes it possible to understand them. In real life or in the process of work and study, comparison is fundamental in understanding the nature of things, it’s the way of thinking people often use to understand, differentiate and determine differences and similarities of things around. In language practice comparison methods are widely used and are more complicated. This research mainly concentrates on analysing Chinese and Vietnamese typical comparative structure-comparative sentences with"比". On the basics of the previous research, this thesis, using the language comparative analysis theory, inter-language theory, errors analysis theory, provide the research on common errors made by Vietnamese students in Chinese "比"comparative sentences. This research can help students to get a deeper understanding of that language structure, by providing the information on the differences and similarities of grammar structure, semantic characteristics and semantic expression. Finally this thesis by the means of the questionnaire gathered information on the errors Vietnamese students make using Chinese "比"comparative sentences and analysed the causes of those errors, and by predicting those errors in the process of learning to use Chinese comparative sentences we suggested some recommendations on teaching it. We hope that this thesis will provide valuable information for both Chinese and international researchers, and contributed into the research work on teaching Chinese as a foreign language, second language teaching and translation.
