With the rapid development of Chinese economy ever since the reform and opening uppolicy, China has gained an ever-increasing development in science and technology.Meanwhile, the overall strength of China has been more influential than never before acrossthe globe. Ever since the new millennium, China has entered the WTO, and has held a seriesof international festivals and grand gatherings like the29thOlympic Games, Shanghai Expo, and the Shenzhen Universiade. China has become the focus of more and more countries andregions of the world and has been holding more and more press conferences in not onlyChinese, but foreign languages, especially English. The responsibility and obligation ofinterpreters to make China’s voice heard across the globe has been of more significance andof greater challenge accordingly.Four-character structure, as a special language phenomenon in Chinese language, hasalways been referred to in various types of speeches. Chinese and English language belong todifferent language families, huge differences exist between the order of words or sentences, oreven habit of expressions, which adds more difficulty to the interpretation of four-characterstructures in English. The unique formation of four-character structures can also contribute tothe complexity of interpreting in real practice. While with analysis of the features andcharacteristics of four-character structures in detail and with the guidance of theoreticaltranslation skills, it is not impossible to interpret four-character structures appropriately andefficiently. This thesis is completed based on the instruction of the interpretative theory,inter-cultural communication theory and other theoretical assistance, focusing on theinterpretation of four-character structures in C-E consecutive interpretation with examplestaken mainly from the press conferences of state institutions of China. The thesis can bedivided into six chapters. The first chapter serves as the introduction, in which the authorintroduces the background, the purpose and the significance of the study. The literature reviewcomes afterwards, in which the author reviewed the current study on interpretation of four-character structures and pointed out the weakness of previous studies. In the third chapter, the author thoroughly introduced the theoretical framework of this thesis, namely theinterpretative theory, inter-cultural communication theory, and the contrast study betweenChinese and English. Then in the fourth chapter of the thesis, the author contrasted thedifferent habit of expression in Chinese and English, and the effect on interpretation offour-character structures due to the differences in the two languages. The fifth chapter, as themain body of the thesis, can be further divided into four parts, among which the firstintroduces the process of interpreting four-character structures in light of the interpretativetheory; the second part presents three practical principles for the interpretation offour-character structures; the third part lists countermeasures for interpreters to deal withfour-character structures in C-E consecutive interpretation with examples from pressconferences of state institutions. The last chapter, chapter six functions as a conclusion of thethesis, in which the author summarized the previous study, listed out the major findings of thethesis together with the limitations of the study, and expressed suggestions for the futurestudy.
