This report is based on the translation of the book Printing in Plastic——Building Your Own3D Printer (Excerpts). It introduces and summarizes the process and completion of this translation task. The content of the source text is to introduce creation method of3D printer. Translating such a text should be not only accurate and objective in content but also succinct and normative in expression. This report discusses the characteristics and methods of scientific translation based on Catford’s translation shift theory. It consists of five parts:introduction, description of translation task, description of translation process, case analysis and summary. The first chapter is to introduce the background and meaning of this translation practice. The second chapter introduces background of the source text, and analyzes the characteristics of scientific articles from the aspects of words and sentences, paving the way for translation. The third chapter describes the implementation of translation, including preparation, process and post-translation. As key part of the report, the fourth chapter can be divided into three parts:1) translation difficulties, including the translation of specialized vocabulary and processing long and difficult sentences2) analyzing the solution of the difficulties by case study under the guidance of shift theory.3) summarizing the translation strategies of scientific translation and application in this translation practice. The last chapter is the summary of this translation practice, including writer’s harvest and the deficiencies of this translation task.
