As a practice report in English to Chinese, the author of this paper selects Chapter six of Middle Classes:Their Rise and Sprawl as translation text. The original text mainly introduces the culture of English middle class and the values, the educational conditions of them from the latter part of the 19th century to the early the 20th century. It’s a text about social sciences including the knowledge of history, sociology and education. The part of the original text that I have chosen for my practice report mainly introduces many aspects of English secondary education development from the latter part of the 19th century to the early the 20th century. The original text involves many contents like secondary educational reforms, different kinds of schools and examination system etc, which demands the translator to handle the problems of a mass of proper names and long difficult sentences with cultural background. So the author of this report tries to solve these problems in the guidance of Newmark’s text typology theory, and some translation methods, to explore the translation strategy of informative text. This report aims at providing a translation reference about the 19th and the 20th century English secondary education development for readers and doing something for the development and improvement of the translation of foreign social sciences in China.
