The present paper is a translation report, in which the source text is the translation practice is part of a passage published by United Nations Food Agriculture Organization(FAO) in May, 2014. The whole passage consists of five parts: the first one is about executive summary; the second one introduces the background of the rice situation around the world; the second part tells the strategic objectives; the fourth section represents the key themes and options of problems rising in rice production and food security; the last part is the expectations on rice in the future, and the translation is about the fourth part, which as the main part of the whole passage can make positive contribution to the development of Chinese rice and food security.The part translated by the writer introduces the related strategies and options of rice. Because the source text falls into the area of English science and technology, the writer chose text typology of Reiss to guide the translation. According to text typology, the source text should be classified into informative text, whose purpose is to deliver information and facts. So the translation should follow the principle of “faithfulness and smooth”. Besides, the translation report is made up of five chapters: the first one is the brief introduction to translation report, including the back ground, the purpose and significance of the translation report; the second chapter gives the background introduction of the source text, involving something about the author and background of the source text as well as the analysis of the linguistic features of the source text; the following chapter indicates the introduction to text typology, its guide to the translation and the translation principles under the theory; the fourth chapter is about the introduction to pre-preparations for translation, translation difficulties and approaches, which includes not only the key and difficult points but also analysis of the case study. The main translation approaches guiding the translation involve conversion, amplification and omission, splitting, reversing and recasting and so on; the last part summarizes the experiences the writer got from the translation and its report as well as the problems to be solved in the future.
