A Report On The Translation Of The Art Of Lawn Tennis

This report is on the translation of the Introduction and the laws of tennis psychology from The Art of Lawn Tennis written by William Tatem Tilden II. These two parts are mainly about tennis skills, the introduction of some games and the advice that the writer gives to the tennis players and learners. The type of the text is mainly informative, but the author also employs the vocative text to assist to convey the information. Therefore, The Art of Lawn Tennis is a hybrid, a mixed text with informative text as the major part and the vocative text as minority. This report analyses these two kinds of texts as examples. In translation process, based on the principle of the “truth” of the informative text, the translator emphasizes the practicability and vocative character. Through analyzing the cases, the author explored how to deal with the problems in the translation of the informative text and vocative text so that to achieve the purpose of the writer: offering the readers and tennis fans the accurate and truthful information.
