First, among various interpreting activities, conference interpreting is a pretty demanding one. Compared with other types of interpreting, conference interpreting is more strict in standardization and accuracy, and in which, press conference is more demanding in interpreting quality due to its unique political nature and publicity. High standard reference provides more nutrition for us, thus, the study reference of this paper is press conference. Second, we can easily find that many professional interpreters always apply different interpreting techniques consciously or unconsciously. And these techniques mean a lot to interpreting learners and practitioners. Apart from a solid foundation of bilingual or multilingual knowledge, proper application of interpreting techniques provides great help in improving consecutive interpreting skills. Therefore, the main content of this paper is interpreting techniques application. Last, even though simultaneous interpreting has been increasingly applied during recent years, it is difficult for fresh interpreters to learn, so the study area of this paper is consecutive interpreting. To sum up, I take the press conference of the Second Session of the Twelfth National People’s Congress as an example and make a comparison on both interpreting results and the processes between the author and the original interpreter who represents the highest ability of Chinese interpreters, discussing conference interpreting techniques, applications and details that are worth to pay attention to.The first chapter gives a brief introduction of consecutive interpreting, including its definition and features. The second chapter analyzes the process of consecutive interpreting, dividing it into three phases:listening and comprehending; memorizing and analyzing; reencoding and expressing, each phase is followed with relevant training tips. Readers can find out what are their weak points from the detailed explanation of interpreting process and then take relevant training. The third chapter will introduce seven frequently-used conference interpreting techniques. The author summarized these techniques by combining personal lessons from interpreting practices and knowledge from reference materials and from other interpreters’ field practices. To make them more understandable and vivid, each technique is attached with one or more examples to illustrate them. These examples are interpreting comparisons of the author and the original interpreter. These comparisons can better show different effects of different technique applications. In many cases, we can not tell for sure which technique or interpretation is better, but this paper provides various perspectives of interpreting techniques for readers’ reference. The last chapter lists issues that are important but usually ignored by interpreters. They are:note-taking, interpreter’s position, the expression of emotions, preparations and error-correction of the original expressions. These problems are lessons from the author and knowledge from other interpreters’ spot interpretations.
